Brother Printer scan issues : won’t scan on Windows 10

Brother printers are known for being reliable, easy to use, space saving and functional as you can not only print but also copy, scan or fax.

However, not all manuals have troubleshooting steps that are exhaustive for each and every problem you may face, such as when the Brother printer does not scan if you are using the Windows 10 operating system.

1. Delete Driver history:

  1. Open the Control Panel on your computer.
  2. Open the “Hardware and Sound” folder and then click “Devices and Printers”.
  3. Right click on your Brother printer model and select “Remove Device” from the menu.
  4. Confirm the deletion by clicking “Yes“.
  5. Once removed, left click on another device and open “Print Server Properties” at the top of the window.
  6. Click on the “Drivers” tab and check if there is an entry for your Brother printer.
  7. If there are, select and delete them.
  8. Now return to the Control Panel home screen. Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
  9. Select and delete the Brother entries. Once completed, restart your computer.

2. Uninstalling the printer software:

  • Once Windows has restarted, open your Internet browser and go to the Brother support website.
  • Click on the “Downloads” option and then type the model name of your Brother printer in the search box.
  • Select your operating system and if Windows 10 is not available, select Windows 8.1 instead and hit search.
  • A page should open with your printer model in the upper left corner. Scroll down to find “Utilities” and select the “Uninstall Tool.”
  • On the next page, accept the End User License Agreement and the download should start automatically.
  • Once the download is complete, click ‘Run‘ in the pop-up window.
  • Navigate to save the file to your desktop and then select the “Unzip” option.
  • Next, go to the desktop and open the new folder “remPnP“, then select the application file “BrRemPnP.exe“. Confirm that you allow the application to make changes to your computer.
  • Now select your Brother printer model from the drop down menu and click ‘OK‘.
  • Wait for the uninstallation to complete and then click ‘OK’.

3. Re-installing Brother Printer software:

  • Open your internet browser and go to the Brother support website.
  • Click on the “Downloads” option and then type the model name of your Brother printer in the search box.
  • Select your operating system and if Windows 10 is not available, select Windows 8.1 instead and hit search.
  • Click “Complete Driver & Software Package” and on the next page accept the End User License Agreement and download.
  • Press “Run” in the pop-up window at the bottom of the screen. The software will begin to download.
  • Once the download is complete, you will be asked to select your preferred language.
  • To complete the installation, you will need to restart your computer one more time.
  • After your computer has restarted, you can reconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer when prompted.

  • Click Start and select All Apps
  • Click brother
  • Select Brother Utilities
  • Select Control Center
  • Try scanning again. If it doesn’t work with the buttons on the printer, try the next solution.

  • Open scanner properties
  • In the network scanner properties dialog, click the Network Settings tab
  • Choose Specify your machine by address or Specify your machine by name. if choosing by address, enter the IP address of the printer and click Apply and then OK.
  • If you chose by name, enter the node name in the Node Name box, click Browse, then choose the Brother printer you want to use and click OK.
  • Finally, click Apply, then OK and exit.
